One thing I already know about the dwarf black olive bonsai it that it’s a real heat lover. In the winter you’ll need to keep it well above 45 degrees and even then it can easily drop quite a few leaves that won’t come back until you can get it back outside and fertilize it where the combination of food and long hot sunny days will bring the foliage back. The only one I’d seen before was out of my snack bracket so I was very excited to find this Dwarf Black Olive Pre Bonsai at Zen Garden Bonsai.

It’s possible you’re wondering what the heck is a pre-bonsai any way? It isn’t a simple indoor plant. Usually a pre bonsai for indoors is a subtropical or even tropical shrub or small tree, growing in a pot and over time it’s been pruned to start shaping it into a bonsai. It hasn’t been planted in the final bonsai pot, but it’s been root pruned now and then to hold it in an undersized pot. So what should you do? First, learn about the plants basic requirements. Dig in and, buy yourself a nice book or hunt down your bonsai society. Browse the sites offering bonsai pots. Choose freely draining bonsai soil, and if you like you can add some moss spores. Spend time examining the potential of this future bonsai. Think about what look you desire later and try your hand.
